I teach students at all levels. For those just beginning, the focus is on sound production, fingering, breathing, developing overall control and learning the basics of Kinko-ryu notation starting with short, easy pieces before progressing onto established pieces from the sankyoku repertoire. As students progress, I introduce pieces from the honkyoku and shinkyoku repertoires to further develop technique and appreciation of the richness of shakuhachi music. I teach at my home in Wantage, Oxfordshire, which is quite well served by public transport. Lessons normally last for about two hours but whole-day lessons are also possible for those living further away. Lessons via Skype are also available. For those who do not yet have a shakuhachi, I normally recommend starting with inexpensive, plastic `Yu` flutes which play well and are easily obtainable.
